Meridian: Where East and West Refuse to Average
A Hong Kong symposium on the oldest cross-disciplinary problem there is: two complete intellectual traditions, each certain the other is missing the point — and the people who work in both without diluting either.
Alignment between East and West is usually proposed as a compromise: meet in the middle, translate the terms, split the difference. This evening starts from the opposite premise — that the middle is where both traditions stop being interesting, and that the people worth listening to are the ones who hold both whole.
Hong Kong is the right room for this conversation, because it has been having it for a hundred and eighty years. Three short talks from people who work across the meridian — in business, in art, in family — and then the table takes over.
